About the author, Korky Day

My name is "Korky" Kirk Norman Day.  I am the author of this book, Leap 4 Love, which I am writing here "on line".

Childhood

I was born in Pasadena, California, in 1948 and was breastfed for about six months.  My mother said she regretted not suckling me more, but she was young and the social pressures against it were very great then.
I have been an activist against drope (psycho-active drugs) since the age of 8, when my mother encouraged me to encourage her to quit smoking tobacco.  She also encouraged my interest in health food, which I still love.
My father helped me to enjoy life, to laugh, to feel wanted, to feel good about myself, including my physical nature, and not be ashamed of nudity.  He made music for me.
My parents divorced, but I was loved and wanted by both.  They both died tragically young, victims of our sick and hateful culture.  In my changing childhood, at times I used the last names Stone, Reznick, Hiscott, and Day.  My ancestors were from Sverige (=Sweden), Deutschland (=Germany), Osterreich (=Austria), Eire (=Ireland), England, the Isle of Jersey, and Hyastan (=Armenia, which is in western Asia).
When I was 17 years old, my immediate family quit going to church.  We had tried 3 different religious denominations, the Unitarian Church, Judaism, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons).  We then got more interested in health food.  We investigated the occult.

Adulthood

I graduated from Ernest Righetti High School in California> Santa Maria, in 1966.  After that, I began using my nickname "Korky" more.  Next I studied a year at George Washington University on scholarship, then a year at Allan Hancock College, but left with no degree.
I worked in a psychedelic light show called the Family Cat, later called Organic Aurora.  We did shows with the Doors, the Seeds, Clear Light, etc.
I protested the USA military draft and the War Against Viet-Nam.  I sought refuge from the draft by going to Coast Salish Nation (Halkomelem) (Canada> British Columbia> Vancouver Island and Vancouver).
True (tolerant) hippies have generally accepted me as one of them since 1966, though I am in the minority who always preferred to keep strictly sober and not deluded by psycho-active drugs.
In Vancouver, I became a nudist activist.  In 1970, I re-established Ulksen Beach as a safe nude beach, now one of the most popular in the world (also known as Wreck Beach).  Then I set up regular nude-friendly indoor pool parties, which are now almost every Saturday in Vancouver.
Always involved in politics, I supported for USA president:  John Kennedy (1960), Barry Goldwater (1964), and Eugene McCarthy (1968).  Then, in Canada, I worked for the New Democratic Party.  Around 1995, I joined the Green Party.
For the most part, I'm self-taught and have learned by doing.  My family is mostly teachers, but instead I worked in the alternative media.  I founded newspapers, including the Georgia Grape and Allies.
Allies Co-publishing Newspaper was my experiment in de-centralized, non-hierarchical media.  I gathered 37 publishers into a coalition.  They each published in the one newspaper some pages over which they retained complete editorial and financial control.  We put out 15 issues from 1992 to 1996.  Our circulation was  35 000  in BC.
I was the copy editor for Modest Proposal, a magazine about alternative comedians and comedy.  See  www.mpempire.com.
Also, I've put on many dances.  I worked for Greenpeace and many odd jobs.  Mostly I've been poor.
Until I was 35 years old, I thought it was unwise to be limited to one sex partner at a time.  Now, however, I realize that I was simply immature emotionally, like most men.  I am sorry that I emotionally hurt some people.  I have stuck with one woman at a time since then.
I've owned 7 bicycles and several co-operatives, but no motor vehicles, televisions, buildings, or land.

Now

I love to debate, wrestle, and dance, which are similar.  I also picket, wear badges, hike, and play volleyball.  I organize events and groups.
I live in Canada> BC> Vancouver, occasionally visiting BC> Vancouver Island; and USA> Arizona.
   I write and edit as a free-lancer
I'm the editor of a Green Party newsletter www.maricopagreens.org, though I'm now on strike.
My Hai (Armenian) name is Korky Tashjian.  Usually you can hear me on Armenian Variety Show, which is on almost every Tuesday from 6 to 7 pm, Vancouver Co-operative Radio, CFRO.  Listen on 102.7 FM, Starchoice Satellite 845, cable radio in most of BC, and on the Internet at www.coopradio.org.
Also, I'm organizing a computer worker's co-op and a musicians' television channel.  See "Other Web sites" page herein.
