5.  INTRODUCTION

5.1.  Cancellations, irregularities, big changes, strikes,
      late announcements, schedule warnings, etc.

All the variations (below) are reflected in the main calendar in Sections 3 & 4, above.
Some meetings, dates, times, and places are not confirmed, as noted.

Lower Mainland

Co-ed Naked Yoga (CNY) is defunct.
—CANCELLED Watermelon performs at Kabaret Wednesdays, Biltmore Hotel.
No WBSC swim in 2010 September.  Their season opens in October.
—WBPS-MV meets 6-7 pm, until further noticeThey are joint meetings of Metro Vancouver (regional government) and the Wreck Beach Preservation Society.  They are usually monthly on Thursdays, mid-month.  No meeting 2010 December.  Also, they are moved, until further notice, to the Metro Vancouver office, Airport Square building, #130-1200 West 73rd Avenue (foot of Hudson Street), Vancouver, BC.  That is near the north foot of the Granville Street Bridge (which connects Vancouver and Richmond), facing west (toward Arthur Laing Bridge).  Heavy traffic in area.  We recommend you consult a map, such as the cycling map below in ________ .
P-CAN says they have been excluded from further events at Club 23 for money reasons.  (23 West Cordova Street, Vancouver.)  You may suggest other venues to P-CANSection 9, below.

Outside the Lower Mainland, BC

Indoor swims are over until 2010 ~autumn in Gibsons, Victoria, Kamloops, and Kelowna.

Check this page as often as you like for new developments.  Nevertheless, to avoid disappointment, we recommend you also get on the e-announcement lists of the sponsoring groups themselves.  You can also check their Web publications.  Especially before you travel far to attend an event, we recommend also that you first confirm with the presenters each separate event.
We check for new developments usually daily or every few days.  Within an hour of reading them
, usually, we post them herein.

5.1.5.  Definition of nude-friendly

Nude-friendly is a term coined by your editor, around 1990.  It means friendly to nudists and pleased to include nude people.  It is a broad term that includes events and sites which are either nude-required, nude-optional, or bare as you dare!
On the other hand, "clothing-optional" is a term favoured by governments which are trying to appease nudists, yet not upset the prudes so much.  It is a term which psychologically erodes the nudist movement somewhat.  It insinuates that to say the word "nude" is
too embarrassing to use.  The term "clothing-optional"makes clothing compulsions seem less compulsive and more acceptable than the synonymous term "nude-optional".  In fact, however, clothing addiction harms the addicts and everyone else.  Nudity harms no one, barring cold or other physical risks.
"Bare as you dare" means that nudity is welcomed, but the hosts or organisers of public events do not ensure that you are safe from arrest and charges by the public authorities.  BAYD usually refers to events in public where public nudity is uncommon and more-or-less illegal.
See also Section 5.4.5 below, and topfree (bare above the waist) in Section 11, below.
Similarly, "topfree-friendly" includes topfree-required, topfree-optional, and topfree-as-you-dare (all coined by your editor 2010 April 8).

5.2.  E-mailing

Once a month, without charge, we e-mail a link to this calendar to remind everyone (who wants it) to check this Web publication.  Sometimes the link in the e-announcement doesn't work, as sometimes with Hotmail, we've heard.  If it fails, please "paste" (or type) this address into your Internet address box:
www.korky.ca/nfirc.html .
(Or use the short form "
www.korky.ca"and then click on "NFIR Calendar" at the bottom of the left menu.)
Please e-reply to intended people only, not necessarily "Reply all".  (That is a good rule for you when replying to any e-mail.)
To contribute information, advise, enquire, comment, subscribe, refer, cancel an e-subscription, etc., please e-write to
korkyday  [insert a with a circle round it]  yahoo
[dot] com .  (See also end in Section 20.)
Please e-forward our link to your friends and groups.  If they don't object, please send us their e-addresses and we'll send them a sample subscription.

5.3.  Before you attend — important

Please honour all the following traditions and advice in a. and b., including in public, such as at a nude beach or a nude bike ride.

a.  BEHAVIOUR

The local-government lifeguards say that our indoor pool events attenders are some of the best behaved with whom they deal.  We intend to keep up our reputation.

Generally unwelcome at these pool events, other events, and nude sites are uninvited staring, uninvited following, uninvited hovering, uninvited touching, premature advances, prying or excessive questions, offencive talk, overly sexual talk, men's erections (see explanation which is 5 paragraphs below), overt sex, etc.  For exceptions, ask the organisers first.
If allowed, cameras, photography, and sound recording must be pre-authorised by the club or presenters, by all the subjects, and by the parents of minors.  P
lease always ask politely first.  That includes in public, too, such as at nude beaches, bike rides, and topfree events.  Just because someone is in public does not give you the right to photograph them.  If that were a right and if it were exercised, many fewer people would attend nude--and you wouldn't like that, would you?
This might sound uptight, but nevertheless, please avoid mentioning body appearance or attractiveness, even positive comments, including about persons not present or about people in general.  Show that you can think of other things.  Even if your comment is absolutely
non-discriminatory and non-erotic, when others hear you they still might feel self-conscious.
   In other words,
until you hear otherwise from them, assume that a person has just barely enough nerve to go nude.  Assume that any little comment from you about anyone's appearance will scare them back to shame, fear, and textilism.
You might think that someone with a tattoo is inviting comment, but consider that the wearer might prefer not to have their tattoo anymore or they are really tired of comments.
Adult and teen male erections are rare in mixed-sex nudism, contrary to
some rumours, myths, fantasies, and expectations.  Even if not a crime, and rightly or wrongly, such erections might frighten, annoy, or disgust some attenders, so they are definitely discouraged, even though some people are not offended.  If such a thing occurs, most clubs will advise the male how to diminish them easily, such as by jumping into the water or by lying face down.  Although both nudism and sex are inherently good, we in the main nudist movement keep them separate so that we can attract the most people to nudism.
Please report all violators to group leaders.  That is not because we like to be punitive or authoritarian, but that it helps us to maintain an environment which is inviting and comfortable for all.

When sitting on a bench, chair, chesterfield, log, etc., please sit on a towel, serviette, or similar barrier for hygiene.  A barrier is not necessary at the edge of a pool or on the bare ground.
Do not urinate into the ocean, lake, river, creek, pool, etc. or near the edge.
It is hypocritical to let a child see a woman's breast and then to offer the child a sucking bottle or dummy (a.k.a. pacifier) instead of a breast, or to deny a breast to the child for any reason.  Those artificial substitutes are always cruel, unhealthy, and
unnecessary, whatever the child has seen or not seen.
Smoking, even outdoors, harms and offends many.  Where smoking is allowed, we recommend that you refrain anyway, or at least move away from others while you smoke.  If there is wind, moving down-wind of others is more important than how far away you are.  If there is little or no wind, please move farther away from others and downwind.
If being nude socially doesn't make you happy enough, without you wanting to drink or toke (etc.) also, then maybe you have treatable emotional and social problems.  However, prescription psycho-active drugs are some of the worst drugs, though they have an official seal of approval!

Any resort, club, group, etc., may refuse you admission, membership, association, etc., without explanation.  Be very nice or risk being banned by all the groups.  They communicate with each other about problem people.
We publish in our listings here a group's restrictions (if any and when known).  A few groups restrict according to an attenders' sex, age, or singleness.  N
udism is good for all ages, but for a club's legal protection, they require a parent or legal guardian to accompany a minor.
A few clubs have quotas on singles or have male-female quotas.  They do so to keep from becoming too unbalanced, which could lead to lower attendance and dissatisfaction.  If you notice a male-female imbalance, please help recruit attenders who will "even" the ratio.
Rest assured that these groups will not bar anyone because of degree of attractiveness, size, race, nationality,
sexual preference, religion, social class, occupation, etc.  The rare restrictions on disabled people are only because of a regrettable lack of facilities, etc.

b.  PERSONAL NAMES

Traditionally, in the nudist movement, attenders and members refer to each other by first name only.  That is to keep membership more private.  While it might be declining now, discrimination against nudists still continues in society at large.  The trend could get worse or better, we don't know.
Therefore, with private nudist groups, and even at public nude beaches and nude bike rides, etc., please follow that privacy tradition, except concerning someone who tells you that they don't mind otherwise.
Furthermore, when communicating with non-attenders, please reveal even less:  not even first names, without permission.  Please do not reveal to non-attenders who attends or who does not attend; who is a nudist or not; etc.

You can answer such questions something like this:
"The nudist movement honours privacy.  That's for our protection against discrimination.  If you want to know people's personal information, ask them yourself."

c.  CONFIRM BEFORE ATTENDING

Because of possible errors, unavoidable cancellations, etc., please confirm an event before attending, especially if you would be travelling far.
Admittance and eligibility vary.  Reservations and permission occasionally are required.  An event might sell out.  Memberships are sold at almost all events, though they might take several days to process your application.  Joining by Internet or mail is appreciated generally, when available.

d.  DETAILS ABOUT CALENDAR EVENTS

For each event in the calendar listings, see also further details and the group's general description farther below.  The index of the groups' initials is in the blue section just below the Table of Contents (yellow section at the top).

e.  WE ARE COUNTING ON YOU TO BRING OTHERS!

We encourage you to bring friends, relatives, acquaintances, a date, etc. to nude-friendly events and sites.  You will enjoy it more.  You will share an uplifting experience
and help our movement!
Please bring the kinds of people you like into our movement.  Don't gripe or whine or expect others to recruit them for you, or expect them to appear by magic!  (However, you could contribute money to pay for recruiting!)  As far as we know, no groups in BC have paid recruiters now.  So we are counting on you to help recruit new people.  Also, if you don't, event costs might have to rise to compensate.

5.4.  Everyone can participate!

Welcome to these events, you practicing or potential nudists, naturists (not to be confused with naturalists), nudes, bares, nakeds, nakedists, skinny-dippers, free beachers, nude sunbathers, nude sun-tanners, nude sun-worshipers, nude-optionists, clothing-optionists, clothes-free people, clothesfreers, clothes-freeists, nudies, jaybirds, starkers, streakers, mooners, nude protesters, naked savages, half-naked savages, sweat-lodgers, naked pagans, naked animists, naked witches, naked wiccans, gymnosophists, nude cyclists, nude artists, Burning Man nudes, nude art models, nude body painters, nude artists, nude art appreciators, cottontails (once misstated as "bucktails"), home nudists, solo outdoor nudists, recovering textiles, recovering clothists, nude curiousers, sky-clads, nude Digambara Jains, other nude Jains, nude Freedomite Doukhobors, other nude Doukhobors, Leapists, agnostic nudists, inoffencive flashers, nude-peacers, topfrees, bra-burners, bra-recyclers, bold breastfeeders, shy breastfeeders, and even all of you sympathetic people who avoid or dislike such "labels", "boxes", and "pigeon-holes"!
Remain naked, forgo dressing, get naked, be bare, eschew clothes, disrobe, undress, undrape, uncover,
doff your clothes, strip, streak, go topfree, be shirtless, go bare-chested, bare your chest, and breastfeed.  Never use baby bottles or dummies (pacifiers).  Never sexually mutilate  (circumcision, etc.) anyone except adults who have given their unpressured permission!
Support nude rights by being nude
and by your other actions, attendance, speech, writing, votes, purchases, and donations.  Defend nudes against our detractors.  Your rights—use them or lose them!
Most nude-friendly events are for all sexes and ages, conditionally.  (See Section 5.4.3 below.)

Most event hosts and some site hosts admit you without prior arrangement.  If you lack money, transportation, supplies, etc., ask the organisers (or ask us at NFIR) for options or assistance.
Events and sites which require nudity sometimes grant exceptions to that standard, but don't count on it, especially not without prior arrangement.  See below in Section 17, "Exceptions in nudism".
Genuine nudists accept, welcome, and appreciate everyone, regardless of ability, health, fitness, genetics, attractiveness, etc.  Social nudity (nudism) should not be a "beauty contest", formally or informally, although such contests were common
decades ago at less-enlightened nudist clubs.  Our tolerance and acceptance does not mean that we want you to let your body go, but that nevertheless we welcome you into our movement, whatever your condition.
About refused admission, see Section 5.3.a, Behaviour, above.

5.4.3.  Sex-segregated groups and topfree groups

   Male-only groups:  P-CAN
and SCYoga (both in Section 9, below).
   Female-only groups:
DB and TBN (both in Section 11, below), and LLL (in Section 11, end, below), and Nffc (Section 9, below).
Females and males working for female topfreedom (topfree rights):  3BT (Section 10, below), TERA and Ts (both in Section 11, below).

5.4.5.  Are you proud of tolerating nudes while you are swimsuited?

Perhaps you think you are quite enlightened to be so tolerant like that.  However, please consider the possibility that you are being anti-social by wearing clothes where others are trying to establish a liberated zone.  Public nude beaches are an example.
   For instance, the
invader government will not declare Wreck Beach (Vancouver, BC) a "nude beach" because it is not to their political advantage, even though it would be better for everyone if they did.  Instead, they call it "clothing-optional".  (See definitions in Section 1.5, above)
At Wreck Beach it is not good enough for you merely to tolerate nudes around you while you wear a swimsuit.  Even though the beach was declared "clothing-optional" by the invader government (Metro Vancouver, formerly the GVRD), it really should be called a nude beach, one of the few places nudists can go.  Please don't spoil it by unnecessarily wearing clothes there.
That's like attending a potluck dinner and eating, but bringing no food.  Or wearing plain clothes to a costume ball.  Do you see how you would spoil it for others?  That's really inconsiderate and selfish!  Wearing clothes unnecessarily is the shame, not being nude.
You'll get no respect that way!  You make others naturally suspect you are a gawker, the same as going to a potluck empty-handed makes others suspect you are a moocher.  Just what do you want others to conclude about you when they see you always covering up?  You seem to have some emotional or social problem.  Why not ask us for help with it?
If you really believe that the people at a nude beach would be too unpleasant to you if you were nude, then why do you want to be with such people as us, anyway?  If you can't build up your courage to go nude, please just go to one of the many, many textile beaches.  Leave our few nude havens for those of us who are not so uptight as you.
Of course, if you are a newcomer to nudism and you go to a nude beach, we'll forgive you if you are a little slow to try it.  Many of us were, too.  But too many oblivious,
inconsiderate people attend time after time, enjoy the "good vibes" we create with our nudity, but then impose their selfish clothed presence on us.
You might easily ask, "But what about freedom?  Can't you nudists tolerate textiles like I tolerate you nudists?"  Sounds like you don't understand human nature.  Humans are social animals.  If I am among many people who are wearing clothes, those people automatically put a natural, social peer pressure
(based in our genetics) on me to get dressed, too.  If nudes are not in the great majority of a crowd, they often can feel vulnerable and isolated.  That's natural because, biologically, humans are not a solitary species.  We are a social species.  Human see; human do!  We like to do things as a group.
Of course, some people are brave and bold enough to undress without regard to how many others are dressed.  Those people are rare, though.  Most of us, even
hard-core nudists and hard-core anti-nudists, feel some social pressure in the other direction in "hostile" territory.
The peer-pressure situation is good at the NIFTY nude-optional swims (see the calendar above and Section 6, near the end of that section).  Very few people wear swimsuits at them:  usually none or at most 4%.  Therefore, peer pressure at NIFTY swims favours nudity, not swimsuits.  The occasional person in a swimsuit usually will either learn to screw up their courage to go nude after attending once or twice, or not return.  (Though they are not pressured to dress other than by silent, subtle, unavoidable peer pressure.)
For a potential nudist, then, attending NIFTY can be empowering, joyful, and therapeutic.  The smaller, closer-knit crowd at the pool (compared to Wreck Beach) also makes it easier for some newcomers to feel comfortable nude.  So
if you're reluctant to go nude at a public beach, please attend a NIFTY swim instead, or other private nude-optional events.
(2009~, revised 2010 August 11.)

5.5.  Nude-friendly and affiliated events

Events for pro-nude activists to attend clothed are shown in this fuchsia colour and with this asterisk: *.  Such events support nude sites or groups or the movement, but, for one reason or another, those particular events are not nude or topfree.
Events in type of other colours are usually nude optional or nude only, sometimes topfree, instead, as noted.  Occasionally, they are instead bare-as-you-dare, as noted.
Throughout your daily lives, if and when you do dress, please consider wearing a garment or badge promoting nudity, topfree, breastfeeding, unmutilated genitals, health, peace, etc.  You can buy such items from some of these groups.  Or you can make them.

6.   INDOOR  SWIM  DETAILS
           — VANCOUVER  AREA

There are 4 groups, Van Tan Club, Skinnydippers, Wreck Beach Swim Club, and Naked Iconoclasts Fighting The Yoke, which offer "swims" at 4 indoor pools in the Lower Mainland, most months from September to June.  SD offers them every month year-round.
The 4 groups' Web pages for their swims are:
        VT
www.vantan.ca .
        SD
  http://club.skinnydipper.ca/swims/wave_pool_swim.php .
WBSC  www.wreckbeach.org .  ("Swims" in top left menu.)
        NIFTY  www.niftynude.org .
More details are below, including many details that are not in their own Web publications.

We have more details about the swims here in NFIR Calendar than anywhere else.  Here they are usually updated quicker and more accurately!  Another source is
www.nudeswims.bc.ca .

6.1.  Conditions for all 4 swims

Generally the same behaviour rules apply for nude-friendly swims as at public (textile) sessions at pools, or stricter.  (See Section 5.3.1 Before you attend, above.)
Each of the 4 groups rents a different public indoor pool for about 7 to 12 swim nights a year, to which it invites you.  The prices, rules, facilities, and activities are similar at all 4.  Many people go to all 4.  NIFTY's is nude optional (though mostly nudes).  The other 3, instead, are for nudes only.
See how else they differ, below, in this section—and later in each group's entry (Sections 8 to 10, below).
   Schedules:
Most of the swims are September (after Labour Day) through June, with minor variations around holidays, pool cleaning closures, etc.  See Sections 3 and 5.1, above.  Only SD swims in Surrey are year-round.
   Facilities:
All are indoors.  Each venue has a pool, sauna, and hot tub with jets.  All except Newton Wave Pool (SD) have diving board(s).  Each is wheelchair accessible.  Usually they play water volleyball (except maybe Newton Wave Pool), for which it helps if you are 122 cm tall or taller.  All are guarded by the regular city lifeguards.
   Joining:
Skinnydippers and NIFTY require membership for adults.  With Van Tan and Wreck Beach SC, membership is optional.  At all of them, you may join at the door.  Other than a membership fee, joining does not oblige you more than a non-member.  Everyone must follow the regular pool rules, plus the club rules, especially safe and respectful behaviour.  Your information is not given out without your permission.
   Tickets and passes:
These swims are private events at rented public facilities.  Tickets, discounts, or free passes which are for public sessions will not help to admit you to these private events.  However, certain documents will get you a half-price or full discount at NIFTY swims:  see Section 6.5, last sub-section, below.
   Minors:
At all these swims (and most other nude-friendly events) parents and legal guardians are welcome to bring their minor offspring at no extra charge and without enroling them.  No other minors may attend (for legal protection).  A breastfeeding professional (IBCLC) often attends.
   Lockers:
Some lockers can be secured with a lock you bring.  Others lock only with their own mechanism.  Some cost 25 ¢ or 50 ¢.  Some accept a token (sold at the desk; no refund).  Some return your coins after use.  Items left unlocked are at your own risk.  Which places have which
kinds of lockers, when known, is noted below.
   Restaurants:
Right after or right before most swims, some of the attenders meet clothed at a restaurant to socialise, and (if they so choose) to buy and eat food.  No cover charge.  Check the events in Section 3, above, in the club info, below, or ask the organisers.  (They are in this colour to show they are clothed events.)*

          Van Tan  Swim  Club      (VT)

Van Tan Nudist Club maintains their rustic, private resort on a mountainside in the District of North Vancouver, BC.  It is the oldest in Canada:  since 1939.  Co-operatively owned.  Affiliated with the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) and with the Federation of Canadian Naturists (FCN) (both in Section 14, below).
At their 3-hectare resort grounds are:  camping, tenting, picnicking, barbecue, wood-burning sauna, shower, outdoor pool, grass volleyball, grass badminton,
shuffleboard, horseshoes, outhouses, distant view, etc.  (No cabins, RV hook-ups, hot tub, or clubhouse.)
Grounds are ~2 km uphill from a city bus route, a 30- to 60-minute walk, mostly on an uneven gravel road.
Get permission before attending, except to attend an "open house".  Some events are only for members, sometimes with invited guests.
—Approximately 3 open houses per year.
For more about the above events and about events not in the calendar (Section 3, above), contact the club, or see:

NIFTY promotes the nude option and topfree everywhere.
The letters in NIFTY stand for Naked Iconoclasts Fighting
The Yoke.  An iconoclast is one who smashes inanimate icons or idols—especially those which mislead the people, or who discredits people who are idolised undeservedly.  Icons and idols include cherished lies and selfish leaders and celebrities.  The yoke, a work collar for oxen, is a symbol of enslavement.

Look Nude Film Festival International of Vancouver  (LNFF)
A Royal Canadian Bare Farce!

Get in on the "ground floor"!  We need organisers to plan our first festival.
The festival name has a triple meaning:  encouraging you to live less vicariously by
   (1) looking at nude people.
   (2) while actually nude yourself (optional).
   (3) The phrase "look nude" also slyly hints at looking as if you are nude when you are not.
We'll have a discussion after each work screened.
We could show film, videos, DVDs, television shows, etc.; mainstream and alternative; comedy, drama, and documentaries; new and old; long and short.  However, we will not show erotic or violent material.

First Nations traditionally expect or respect social nudity in many circumstances.  Please respect them and their territories:  almost all of so-called British Columbia.
About 95% of ocean, river, and lake coasts in "BC" are nude-friendly.  That's because when you and your friends get there—no one else is there!  That often happens, even at hot springs.

Wreck Beach Preservation Society  (WBPS)

Affiliated with the Federation of Canadian Naturists (FCN)
(both in Section 14, below)
Wreck Beach is one of the most popular and well-known nude beaches in the world.  It is at Ulksen (or Ulksun) in Coast Salish, which the invaders call Point Grey.  The whole 8-km coast within Pacific Spirit Regional Park (around the University of British Columbia or UBC) is defended by the WBPS.

A second Jane's Walk will be announced.  Explore the flora, fauna, geology, and rich ethnographic and cultural history of a selected stretch of 7.8-km long Wreck Beach.  Judy Williams is the chair of the Wreck Beach Preservation Society.  As this will be along a sand and cobble beach and the weather might be wet, wear suitable footwear and dress accordingly.  Birders might wish to bring their binoculars, and proper beach etiquette should be observed, especially with regard to photography.  Not wheelchair accessible.  Registrants will be notified of starting location.  Jane's Walk is held simultaneously in cities across Canada and other countries around the world.  Inspired by Jane Jacobs and her belief that in order to know your city "you have to get out and walk."
http://jw10wreckbeachwalkonthewildside1.eventbrite.com/

The invaders' park authority has designated greater Wreck Beach "clothing optional" from Acadia Beach (see below) west and south to and beyond Trail 7.  That designation includes Towers Beach (contrary to Chris Gudgeon's otherwise-good book, The Naked Truth).
Lawsuit in 2004 against UBC: "UBC, Nudists Duel in the Sand" by Tyler Hopson:  foes of planned towers above Wreck Beach fear the cliffs eroding; June 7, 2004.
http://thetyee.ca/News/2004/06/07/UBC_Nudists_Duel_in_the_Sand/
Buses:  Take any bus that goes to the UBC Bus Loop, as below.  Bus 99 is quite fast.
—West on 4th Avenude:  4, 44, 84, 258.
—West on Broadway and 10th Avenude:  9, 17, 99, N17.
—West on King Edward and 25th Avenude, etc:  25.
—West on 41st Avenude:  41, 43, 480.
—West on 49th Avenude:  49.
Then, from the UBC Bus Loop,  either walk to Marine Drive or take the C20 bus to Marine Drive, which continue until ~9:20 pm or later—leaving just south of the top of Trail 6 at ~20-minute intervals.
Bus to Acadia Beach:  The buses along 4th Avenude (above) and that little C20 bus are the ones which go a bit closer to this part of the beach.  Ask the driver if they can let you off at Chancellor Boulevard and Wesbrook.  Then walk northwest on Wesbrook to Marine Drive, then east on Marine.  If the C20 won't stop there, ask for Marine Drive and Chancellor Boulevard, then walk east on Marine.

Acadia Beach  (AB)

This beach is a section of greater Wreck Beach (see above), between Towers Beach (nude) and Spanish Banks West Beach (textile).  All of those are north-east of Ulksen (Point Grey).  AB is good for people less physically able, because the trail is very short and gentle.  The beach itself is soft sand with some logs and rocks.
Directions to Acadia Beach:  Starting from the top of Trail 6 (the main trail to Wreck Beach), go north on Marine Dr. (the main road around UBC) to the big intersection of Chancellor Blvd. and Marine Dr.  Turn left.  Continue north, then curving east on NW Marine Dr., which goes downhill.  As the road curves right, almost to sea level, there's a small dirt parking lot on the left.  It adjoins the beach.
Directions from beaches to the east (Jericho Beach, Kitsilano, etc.):  go west on West 4th Avenue, which turns into NW Marine Dr., winding past popular clothed beaches.  After you pass Spanish Banks West Beach, you'll see many trees on the right, before the uphill stretch of Marine Dr.  On the right there is a small parking lot adjoining the beach.

Metro Vancouver  (MV)
(formerly GVRD)

This government body meets monthly with the WBPS (the above listing):
—Usually third Thursday of the month, starting at 6 or 7 pm (sometimes 8 pm in summer):   Metro Vancouver (MV) monthly meetings with WBPS, 4915 West 16th Avenue (in a trailer in Pacific Spirit Park), Vancouver; for dates, etc., see calendar at top.*

Meetings moved temporarily, until further notice (?), to
            Airport Square building,
1200 West 73rd Avenue (at Hudson Street), Vancouver.
That is near the north foot of the Granville Street Bridge (which connects Vancouver and Richmond), facing west (toward Arthur Laing Bridge).  Heavy traffic in area.

Nude Beach Boat-Pool  (NBB)

A free service in BC (especially Wreck Beach) to connect:
      1.  Those of you who have watercraft with which you can take one or more people to and/or from a nude beach.
      2.  Those of you who have difficulty hiking to or from your desired part of a nude beach.

Such trips could be one-way or both ways.  It could be free, for barter, etc.—whatever you arrange.
Vessels could be sail boats, row boats, canoes, power boats, etc.
Please always use flotation-vests, even when naked otherwise!  And sail sober!
Arrange trips as far ahead as possible, please.  No guarantees of a match or of satisfaction.

Crescent Rock Beach  (CRB)

Used nude since ~1957 (and earlier) unofficially.  In south-west Surrey around Kwomais Point.
6.5 km long:  south from Crescent Beach (in south-west Surrey), then east to White Rock.
For nudity, use any shore out of sight of trains and of passers-by on paths above the beach.
   3 main naturist areas:
   1.  Most-used part:  from Crescent Beach, walk south 10 min.; or from west end of 24th Ave., descend "101 Steps", then south 200 m (just south of the giant Crescent Rock Boulder) and around the next point (another 200 m — until sand ends and shore is seen from tracks).
   2.  From Ocean Park area of Surrey, go west on 15A Avenue to its end.  Descend "1001 Steps".  Walk north 500 m to railway marker "126 mile" (=203 km); many raised beds built above high tide.
   3.  From White Rock, go south on 140th Street = Nichol Road.  Respect parking rules.  Continue to end, Terry Road, then left (east) 1 block to stairs.  Descend to beach, then 1 km right (west) to railway marker "124 Mile" (=200 km) on tracks, just inside Surrey.  Use next 1.6 km of beach.
   Buses:  Routes 351, 352, C50, and C51.
See Surrey's United Naturists (SUN) in Section 9.  Non-landed groups, above.

Prior Lake Club  (PL)

Prior Lake has a long-established nude section.  It is west of Victoria, Vancouver Island, BC, and north-east of Thetis Lake in Thetis Lake Park.
We need a contact for them.  In the meantime, ask Arbutus Park Club in Section 9, Non-landed groups, above.

11.
FREEDOM  AMONG  TEXTILES

(and miscellaneous groups)

The teasing nick-name "textiles" means people who wear textile (or other attire) socially to hide their genitals, breasts, bums, etc.
So this section "freedom among textiles" includes possibilities for being nude or topfree non-commercially and non-offencively among clothed people, including when not expected.

The first 8 below relate to topfreedom.

Topfree Equality Rights Association  (TERA)
/
Association du droit égal aux seins nus

Your equal right to remove your top in public and bare your chest, regardless of your sex, is legally established in BC, Ontario, and Manitoba (denied in Saskatchewan).  That is a return to First Nations custom—and a great boon to breastfeeding.  Places includes beaches, parks, pools, sidewalks, your own property, and some private businesses and premises open to the public.  Wherever one sex can bare their chests in public sight, so can the other.  See equal rights section of the Canadian Constitution.  (Web site?)
(Such rights are established also in parts of the USA:  California coast; New York state; Hawaii; Maine; Ohio; Texas; Washington, DC; etc.  Europe and Australia are generally much more advanced.)
Even if the authorities illegally harass you, if you're calm and respectful, they'll generally give you just a warning so that you can avoid arrest, fines, etc.  Then you either cover up or wait while they check with their supervisors and illegally detain you.
In BC, cite the court case Maple Ridge vs. Meyer, 2000 June 8
www.courts.gov.bc.ca/jdb%2Dtxt/sc/00/09/s00%2D0902.htm
2000 BCSC 902, Docket # A 972072, Registry Vancouver.  The case document is also at:
www.tera.ca/legal.html#Meyer .
For problems with Vancouver city parks staff at beaches, parks, pools, community centres, etc., cordially remind them of the letter that all staff got from the parks department.  That letter  (approximately 2000 June) instructed their staff to comply with that court ruling.
We have a report of occasional topfree at Kitsilano Beach.
Breastfeeding while hiding most of your breasts is even less likely to draw illegal and immoral harassment (from the authorities and others).  If you are bolder, though, you'll enhance your rights and increase your mother-child love by letting your child see more and feel more of you, which also lets your child learn your pride.

Topfree swims  (Ts)

Theoretically, all public swims are topfree in Canada, although that is practiced seldom by females.  That legal precedent was set in BC in 2000 June 8 (see TERA, in this section, adjacent entry, above).
To attend one at which you will be assured to be topfree with at least one other female besides yourself, or to organise such, you may ask c/o your editor:

See also BMV (below) for a new topfree beach.

Dykes on Bikes  (DB)

A group of lesbian motorbikers.  Some ride topfree.
—TENTATIVE 2011 July or August.  DB lead the Dyke March.
—TENTATIVE 2011 July or August.  DB lead the Pride Parade (VPS, this section, above).

   (Would they welcome cyclists also?)

Take Back the Night  (TBN)

Night march of feminists who insist that women should be free to be out at night without fear.  Occasionally some of the marchers are topfree.  In the Vancouver, BC, area.  To be announced.  Past marches have been in the autumn.  Men are invited to stand at the sidelines in solidarity.   Presented by Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter.
www.rapereliefshelter.bc.ca/events/index.html#tbtn .

Vancouver Folk Music Festival  (VFMF)

Large, progressive, annual event.  Music and booths are both inside the fenced area (paid admission) and outside, in an area with no admission charge, to the northwest.  Usually some women are topfree, inside and out.  See TERA, at the top of this section.
www.thefestival.bc.ca .
—TENTATIVE 2011 mid-July.  NFIR topfree booth (promoting topfreedom and nudity, and book sales) outside north-west fence of the VFMF Festival at the beach (free—no ticket required if you stay outside the festival fence).  Jericho Beach, Vancouver, BC.  A pro-nude (possibly topfree) booth might be inside the fence, too (ticket required).

CFOX 99.3 FM Radio

Commercial radio station CFOX 99.3 FM started their Annual Topless Train-ride of Fun in 2007.  I guess they haven't heard that the liberated term is now "topfree".
Their second one, 2008 March 14, was busted by the Vancouver Police. See news story below in Section 15, News.
They have not responded to NFIRC requests for information about 2009 or later events.  If you have heard them announce it on their radio programme, please tell us.
They invite everyone to ride topfree with them. Promoted on the station's Jeff O'Neil programme, weekdays 6-10 am.  One picture in photo section about 90% of the way down the page:
www.cfox.com/shows/oneil.cfm?rem=9132&jor=9132&var=morn
They say "Prizes for the loveliest and most creative people!" That and other things on Jeff's Web pages indicate that maybe they need us nudists and topfrees to teach them a bit more liberation, so they can be less sleazy.  However, let's hope for the best.  See TERA entry, above.
Cost to attend is only the usual 3-zone transit fare or pass.

Vancouver Pride Society  (VPS)

   Celebrating lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transsexual, transvestite, questioning, etc. people (LGBTTQ).  Annual July or August parade (might be the biggest parade of any kind in BC).  To walk nude in this public parade, men can contact P-CAN (Section 9, above).  In the 2010 parade, a man in another contiguent was nude.
Also, some women are topfree in the parade, including many of the Dykes on Bikes (listing below), who lead the parade on motorcycles.
Many other events, too, in addition to the parade, mostly in the week before the parade.
www.vancouverpride.ca/event-details.cfm?pageid=30&id=154 .
—TENTATIVE 2011 July or
August.  Pride Parade (LGBTTQ); Dykes on Bikes lead parade, some topfree (this section, below), other occasional topfree throughout, including spectators, TENTATIVELY, P-CAN men march nude in it (others can join them) (Section 9, above); Robson & Thurlow, to Sunset Beach, West End, Vancouver, BC.

World Naked Bike Ride  (WNBR)

Bare as you dare on a bicycle.  You need not be completely naked to join this event.  Police might arrest you for nudity, but haven't yet in BC (since 2002).  Minors attending would be risky.
Nevertheless, topfree is perfectly legal in the ride in BC:  see TERA above at the top of this section.
Daring nude and near-nude cyclists tour city together.  They get away with it in many cities.  Also they use other human-powered vehicles and skates (getting behind could be a problem).

Critical Mass  (CM)

Usually a clothed group.  They have fun, political, group bicycle rides in Vancouver.  Many of the same people as WNBR, above.   Ocassionally they have had a nude, near-nude, or undergarment theme, etc. for their ride.   It will be listed in this calendar when we hear that they will.
They say that they don't believe in leaders.  Route is spontaneous.

In 2008, they started performing also at Mystic Beach, (outside Jordan River), near Sooke, south Vancouver Island, BC.

Celebration of the 40th anniversary of
the Nude-In at Wreck Beach
2010 August 22, Sunday, 2-9 pm.
(one day before the actual anniversary)
Followed by general discussion.
Near the foot of Trail 6, Wreck Beach (Ulksen Beach),
in so-called Pacific Spirit Regional Park, Vancouver, BC.
by "Mr. Natural" (Korky Day), organiser of the original Nude-In.

Come and re-live those days of youthful rebellion, naturalness, innovation, elation, solidarity, freedom, intelligence, change, hope, love, and peace.  Go nude unless you're too cowardly, repressed, or rude.  Bring sunscreen.  Please respect everyone's right to refuse photography.
When I was 22 years old, in 1970, I was frustrated that the Vancouver area had no nude beach of which I was aware.  So I announced a Nude-In (inspired by civil rights "sit-ins", etc.) for 1970 August 23, Sunday, in the radical newspaper of which I was one of the collective owners, the Georgia Straight.
Then people told me that there was already a local nude beach that was not very well-known:  Wreck Beach.  Some were fearful that I would spoil it, their secret skinny-dipping spot, with publicity and hordes of attenders.  Others welcomed nudists coming out of the closet.   Arrests ensued.  Court cases.  Victory.  No one charged with nudity in the following 40 years.
Let us acknowledge our debt and gratitude to the First Nations, including the Musqueam, who of course have sovereignty over Wreck Beach.  The greedy, criminal, invader governments (Canada and the provinces) continue, generation after generation, to refuse to negotiate aboriginal land claims in good faith.
Point Grey is "Ulksen" in Musqueam, I've read.  The First Nations had no swimsuits or, as far as I can tell, little or no false modesty.  They lived largely nude, weather permitting.  Then those hang-ups were imposed on the indigeni nations by the European invaders, including their missionaries.
At this event I hope to provoke a good discussion of the successes, failures, and future of Wreck Beach.  Will successive generations of humans defend or neglect what we hippies, nudists, and allies tried to create?  Will the moneyed and prudish interests finally get their road on the beach all around the peninsula?
Please contact me ahead of the celebration with offers of participation, questions, suggestions, etc.:

Yahoo hides "nude" e-mail:  shocking test results

You are taking a risk if you include the word "nude" in an e-letter, including in the appended previous correspondance.  Such a message might get filtred out as spam by Yahoo (and maybe other e-mail services), it seems by my test results.
It might be better in your e-mail to use abbreviations or substitutes for the word, such as N or n***.  Also, you might want to send a copy to yourself of e-letters that you send, and then check your spam box, just to if they arrive there.  If so, try to determine what words you used triggered the sorting as spam.
Also I suggest that you check your Spam box to rescue such letters going to you.
And I wonder what all the taboo words are!  --2010 August 9.

New movie Babies now in theatres

French title
Bébé(s)
Review by Korky Day.

A documentary movie by French men about 4 babies from 4 countries is not considered fit for all audiences in the USA.  I saw it 2010 May 11 in a small theatre
holding maybe 50 women and 3 men (I'm in the second category).  We saw scenes in Mongolia, Japan, Namibia, and the USA continually inter-spliced.
The USA authorities gave it a PG classification:  "parental guidance".  Are they trying to protect tender eyes from the sight of one baby slapping another?  Gosh, no, they are paranoid about the sight of breastfeeding!  They lie through their teeth and call it "cultural and maternal nudity throughout".  Seeing only breasts is not "nudity"!  We were shown no vaginas, merely a couple of baby penises.

Furthermore, the numbskull authorities don't understand that all nudity is "cultural".  The sight of naughty bits was occasional, not "throughout", and mostly in Namibia.  Nobody over the age of one appeared to be a real nudist.
What this commercial release seemed to be attempting was to entertain us while opening our minds to other cultures' ways of upbringing.  A modest goal, and it succeeded.
A more helpful, more urgent goal would have been to present real evidence about the health and sustainability of various child-raising practices.  Instead, we who are already well-informed will notice the superiority of old traditions like breastfeeding, while the naive will judge the 2 bottle-fed babies in the 2 modern countries to be doing fine and maybe even being better raised than the 2 exclusively-breastfed babies.
All in all, though, Babies is much better than America's Funniest Home Videos.  Men, risk the boredom of a movie without car chases or sex.  See it with a woman about whom you care.

Place needed on Hornby Island for week-end

Letter from
Arbutus Park Club (Section 9, above):

Arbutus Park Club is looking for someone on Hornby Island who may allow us to use their property for a weekend of camping.  We would prefer to stay on someone's property who enjoys the same interests as our Club, which is to have an enjoyable nude day at the beach.  It appears the campgrounds on Hornby have a set rule about a minimum 2-night stay, which some of our group just wouldn't be able to do.
Some of our group would be able to take the Friday off work to come up and get things set-up and organized and the rest would be joining us on Saturday for a one night stay.
Anyone who would be willing to accommodate our group I'd be happy to hear from you.  You can e-mail me at this address so that I can get in touch with you, and hopefully, make arrangements for a fun up-coming summer event.

Thank you for your consideration,

Vote in DemoChoice's polls on body exposure

The great e-poll service DemoChoice lets the public rank their choices in numerical order of preference.  Few other public polls do so, unfortunately.
As anyone can, your editor recently posted 2 questions there.  You can vote on those 2 and see the results so far.  (I have other polls there that you can answer, too.)
When voting, you are not required to rank ALL the choices.
Here is how to vote on the 2 relating to nudity:

www.demochoice.org/dcballot.php?norot=on&poll=menexposur
"What of men you want to see in public"

www.demochoice.org/dcballot.php?norot=on&poll=womexposur
"What of women you want to see in public"

The answers that you can rank (as to what you want to see) are the same for each of those 2 polls.  They are:
 1.  Nothing exposed:  all covered.
 2.  Just eyes.
 3.  Just face.
 4.  Face and lower head.
 5.  Whole head.
 6.  Face, lower head, and hands.

Movie review
Dust and Illusions (A History of Burning Man)

Directed by Olivier Bonin.
Movie review by Korky Day,
2009 July 13, revised December 29.

Dust and Illusions is intriguing, well-done, thought-provoking, and illuminating (pardon the pun!).  However, I still am not sure if I ever want to attend the festival.  I like art, but having so much of it over-sized seems a waste.  Burning is a waste and harms nature.  Fireworks are symbolic of war and horror.  Perhaps all that fits with the male megalomaniacal destructive themes and nature of the event, even though some of the art is shown being made by women.
We learn in the movie that Burning Man has always been male-dominated.  The movie was also very male-dominated (director, narrator, most interviewees, etc.).
I would have liked to see scenes of walking around in the daytime and seeing what art and activities people brought that were not huge, not burning, and not subsidized by ticket sales.  I've heard that such things there are quite amazing.
Also, I'm attracted to Burning Man's camping, community spirit, near total lack of selling (not mentioned in the movie), potential for liberation, fun, and nudity.  I'm repelled by the widespread use of what I call "drope" (alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, pharmaceuticals, grass, and other drugs).
A veteran female attender told me that at the event there's a lot of sex with people whose ability to consent is impaired by drope, including the date-rape drug.  That was mentioned only obliquely in the movie.
The movie mentioned "deadly accidents" at the event, but left it unclear how many deaths.
It seems the sympathetic director's intent was to help "Burners" improve their event.  Dust and Illusions is a fine attempt at that.  I hope it succeeds.

News added for 2008 August:

2 new groups "launched"!

Here are 2 new exciting efforts in the nude-friendly community in the Lower Mainland of "BC":
Nude Beach Boat-Pool (NBB), which matches people with watercraft going to Wreck Beach (or other nude beaches) with people who can't use the trails.  See the listing in Section 10, above.
Look Nude Film Festival International of Vancouver (LNFF), an annual festival of movies and shorts (pardon the expression).  They are all about genuine social nudity—movies to be looked at by a nude audience, preferably.  Volunteer to plan and to present this!  See the listing above in Section 9.

Letter from the Mother of Topfree in BC

2008 March 19
To the editor,
About five years ago Evangeline [Godron] and I went topfree (on public transit) from Maple Ridge to White Rock and back.  We could have walked to White Rock faster.  I have photos of Evangeline being harrassed at the Surrey SkyTrain station (by the RCMP) she never did put her top on and neither did I.
I tried to take photos of the RCMP officers and they hid their faces.  I told the RCMP officers they hid their faces in shame.  Thank goodness for freedom of speech!
Every time Evangeline and I changed our mode of public transportation the police boarded whatever we were riding and demanded we leave.  We said one word:  no. We would wrap our legs areound the chair we were sitting on and I showed the police my case documents, and section 15 (equality) of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and they backed off.  In fact, I carried extra copies of my case and I would offer my case to the police.
Tell women that since men go topfree in public, including public transit, then so can women. Women can go topfree on public property any time they want.  If no one believes me I will go topfree on the bus and on SkyTrain.

New vegetarian restaurant socials after NIFTY swims

Written after the successful event (2008 June; revised 2010 8 10)

We were happy to get 4 nudists brave enough to try a vegetarian restaurant, unlike the previous attempts!  Who knew a carrot was so scary?!  For more about it, see:

Written after the (pardon the expression:) "dud" event (2008 February)

Vancouver-area nudes haven't tried a meatless restaurant as a group for a few years.  (It then was the Naam Restaurant on 4th Avenue, just east of sp? MacDonald St.)
Therefore, your editor invited you to come to one (clothed), starting after the 2008 February NIFTY swim.  All of you chickened out (pardon the expression!)  Come on, naked people, one vegetarian meal isn't going to ruin your life!  Some of you definitely need to be healthier, so why don't you try again?
The restaurant is near Templeton Pool and is called Deserts, the Falafel Oasis (named after the desert land of North Africa, not "desserts" with 3 "S"s).  905 Commercial Drive, about 5 blocks west of the pool.  It's semi-cafeteria style, so you won't have to wait long.  Brown rice dishes, smoothies, tabbouleh salad, etc.  Some is mildly spicy.  Pay only for the food you order, if any.  Low prices, too.  Chef's special dinner is only 6 $.  They have a nice deck outside.  Restaurant telephones 604-251-4171, 568-0776.  For dates, see calendar at top.

Costs, rides, or other problems?

To remain successful, nude-friendly groups, activities, and sites often e-announce.  Give them your e-address, we suggest.

Lend nude-friendly movies, recordings, literature, etc.

We might like to have more showings.  For instance, please lend to NFIR these AANR movies:  # 302 (13 US$) and # 540 (15 US$):  members' prices.  Another, "Welcome to Our World" (~12 min.) is 10 $, non-members' price.

Most popular answer about crying child on Yahoo Questions is crazy
They failed even to mention breastfeeding or topfree

On any Yahoo question, the answer voted the most popular might be all wrong.  Not only the general public, but even the mainstream "experts" are often wrong.
The problem of a child crying is treated as a discipline problem in the answer in the link below.  No, a crying child is not a bad child who is trying to spoil your normal life, as they implied.  The child is usually crying to be breastfed, which they need, or for some other non-malicious reason.  A naturally raised child might need to breastfeed several times an hour, not just several times a day, as most Western experts stupidly say.
To freely breastfeed is why almost all your female ancestors were topfree
so the children could have a few sucks any time.  That's natural and healthy.  If you don't like that, don't be a parent.  Any less breastfeeding will damage your child's physical and emotional health.  And will damage the mother's physical and emotional health.

Added 2009 October (revised 2010 2 16):

Legality of topfree and nudity

Below is our answer to a reader's enquiry regarding Canadian law.
This is not legal advice.  Confirm
with a lawyer.

Topfree

Topfree means bare-chested males and females.  Canada's constitution quarantees sexual equality.
Such equality has been proven in the courts of BC and Ontario for chests.  Elsewhere you might have to be the first to prove likewise in court.  If you are suckling a child you have even further legal and moral reason to uncover your chest.
   Equality means that o
n all public property, if one sex is allowed to be topfree, the other sex is, too.  That includes public beaches, streets, parks, and pools.  That also includes private property, if the owner allows it, even if visible from public property.
If you are topfree in a place where neither sex is allowed to be topfree, they can make you comply or leave.  Even there, however, bare-chestedness is not in itself a criminal offence.
Unfortunately, many police and people in the public don't know the constitution, so they might hassle you.  Fortunately, they won't get a conviction, unless the court precedents are disregarded or unless you are in Saskatchewan.  The precedents will probably hold in today's political climate.  The authorities will back down when their superior officer clues them in, or else if you back down.  For more, see TERA, above, in Section 12.
For other provinces, the same might be the case, but will have to be proven in a test case in court.  Volunteer defendants and lawyers?

Nudity

Public nudity is a more complex issue than topfree.  Unlike topfree, nudity is a criminal offence:  the Nudity Act in the federal criminal code.  That applies everywhere that others can see you, including your neighbour peeking over your fence to see you lying down sunbathing.
However, the act requires all prosecutions to be approved by the provincial attorney-general.  He is highly unlikely to prosecute at Wreck Beach because Metro Vancouver (the regional district) has declared it to be "clothing-optional".  But legally he still could, but he would not get a lasting conviction.
For Vancouver's annual Pride Parade, he hasn't prosecuted those nude in the parade, and is unlikely to do so, because the people who would be offended don't like gays and so wouldn't watch the parade, anyway.
For the World Naked Bike Ride, the nudes go by so fast, on-lookers hardly have time to be offended.  Besides, their genitals are not easy to see when they are cycling.  Also, they seem so harmless and exuberant.  Also, there is legal ambiguity about whether you are nude if you have shoes on.  But you are at a much higher risk of a criminal charge and conviction if you try it without many nudes with you!  Also, bringing a minor is risky.

Added for 2009 February:

Clothing generally is offencive; nudity creates solidarity

by Korky Day

Many people cry that nudity is offencive (British spelling).  Does it occur to them that merely being clothed might be offencive?
I am not referring to the case of clothing with something offencive on it, like a Nazi swastika or a Confederate flag.  Neither do I mean that the clothing is ugly or dirty.  I mean just the fact that someone is clothed when it's warm enough to be naked and some place where the "textile" (clothed person) isn't going to be busted, and they have no other good excuse.  Yes, then their being clothed does offend me!  I'll explain.
Actually, I think everyone has a similar feeling of offence that I do, but it might be subconscious or the feeling might be obscured by other strong feelings.
I think that it is just a natural, animal feeling that when someone unnecessarily hides all or part of themself from you, you feel that they don't trust you and/or don't like you.  Like if someone wears sunglasses, especially when out of the sun.  That can be disconcerting in the same way.
When people are dressed all alike voluntarily, that can help them create a feeling of solidarity that they have something in common, like a volleyball team.  Even more so if they are all naked, because they are saying, in addition to their bodies being equally nude, that they have nothing to hide from each other, that they trust each other, that they like (or at least accept) each other.
However, people dressed differently are alienating themselves from each other.  Someone in a prison guard uniform is saying that he or she is superior to someone in a prisoner's uniform.  Someone in a suit and tie or in a fancy formal gown is saying usually that he or she is economically or socially superior to others, or trying to be.  Even ordinary clothing sends messages of some sort or another.  And it's generally alienating unless it's a shirt saying "I'd rather be nude!"
People remain clothed at a nude beach for reasons I put in 3 categories:
   1.  Fear of being attacked, bothered, or ridiculed.  (Mostly women and youth in this category.)
   2.  Desire to be in a superior position, like watching a commercial strip show while clothed, or like being more armed than an opponent or an underling.  (Mostly men in this category.)
   3.  Fear of being embarrassed or ashamed.  (All types of people.)

Part of maturing as a person is, I think, admitting and overcoming such fears, if you've ever had them.  I'm not a nude optionist.  I'm a nudist.  I think it's not just a frivolous option to be nude, but actually better for you and for society if you are.  I encourage everyone to go nude (weather and laws permitting) not just "if they feel like it", but to grow as people so they know why they feel like it or not.
Going nude in front of others is not just for fun, but to extend good feelings toward others, to try to overcome the usual alienation.
It's up to all of us to create social scenes where everyone feels safe enough to go nude.
Nevertheless, yes, you will see me at nude optional events and sites.  I go to enjoy being nude, to reward others who are nude, and to encourage the textiles to free themselves of their fears.  I don't mean that I harass textiles, but I often will befriend them so that I can, when the mood is right, encourage them toward freedom.
It's up to all of us to try to make everyone confortable enough to be nude.  That's why we don't comment on their attractiveness or make premature suggestive comments, etc.
In the old days, many nudist resorts and clubs had thinly disguised beauty contests, often called king, queen, prince, and princess contests.  The nudist movement has now mostly dispensed with them because such events imply that some people are less accepted and less valued.  Even the textile world has fewer beauty contests out of similarly expanded consciousness, including feminism.
When laws prevent you from being nude, I think showing more skin will cause a natural animal reaction in others of less alienation than being more fully dressed.
   Down with clothing!

Emotional bind over women's bindings

What if you saw a woman sitting calmly and quietly on a park bench wearing handcuffs, leg chains, a blind fold, and a gag.  How would you feel?
I'd feel horrified, afraid, sympathetic, and sorry for her.  I'd want to free her, or at least call the police.  If I did anything to help her, though, I'd be afraid of retribution from whomever bound her.
Well, that's just how I feel when I see a woman or girl wearing a hajib (Middle East headscarf).  I'd feel the same if I ever saw a woman wearing a prescribed veil or burqa.  Those are not quite as binding as the hypothetical situation I described, and the female might think that she is wearing the hajib purely out of her own volition, but I still believe the pressures on her are horrific and intolerable, so that she basically is restricted like a slave.
Now the same is true for all of us in the West who are forced to dress at all.  We could be nude if we wouldn't be harassed.
Nevertheless, the extreme of the hajib still tugs more at my heartstrings.  At least I can imagine that a person in Western dress might be a nudist in their free time.  It's hard to imagine that for the hajib-wearer.           — © 2008 November 21 to 2010 July 3, Korky Day.

Women's tough questions

Men, nudism can help you with some answers in delicate situations.
For instance, she might asks you, "Does this outfit make me look fat?"
You can reply, "To value a person primarily for her looks or clothing is hurtful, oppressive, and sexist.  Since I love you, I want you to be happy.  So for whatever you want, I'll be supportive.  If it would please you, I'd prefer you take the outfit off."
Also, she might ask about another woman, "Do you think she is prettier than I?"
You could explain, "Our patriarchal society tries to make you insecure so that you obey men, serve them, and help them get power.  I want all women to be competent and confident.  Let's make this a world where women wield at least half the political and financial power.  Prettiness is an opinion, not a fact.  I avoid thinking of people in competition for attractiveness."
"If I die, will you let your next woman wear my old clothes?"
"I wish we could live without clothes.  But they are your clothes, so I shall do your will."
      — © 2008 November, Korky Day.

Free tooth floss

You can use hair for dental floss.  I've used my own head hair.  Take a few strands, maybe a dozen or so.  Preferably they're long enough that you can leave them rooted.

Added for 2008 October:

Are your pants too tight?

In the colder climates, we nudists often have to wear clothes for warmth.  Many of you foolishly believe that if you can still breathe, your trousers and underpants are loose enough.  How do you think your muscles are going to flex and stay fit if your clothing is always doing their work for them?  Tight pants are the new corsets and girdles of our age, causing muscle flabbiness and many other diseases and accidents.
When you undress, look at your skin.  Do you see line dents where the elastic bands were?  Do you see marks in other places that garments were constricting you?  If you are white- or brown-skinned, those dents are usually redish.  Those should be your warning signals.  They are not healthy.  Give that clothing to someone thinner!
Clothes should be loose enough that you can lift them up without stretching and slide them around all over your skin.  Ask me to show you when you see me clothed.
Go without underpants, especially "briefs".  Even in the rare cases when they are not too tight, they restrict air flow and breed yeast and other infections.
People like to laugh at famous entertainers who recently got publicity for being seen in public without underpants, but actually the celebrities have the right idea.  If someone gets a glimpse up a skirt, well, at least no one is injured!

Afraid of being pigeon-holed?

I'm getting a little tired of people who practice social nudity but claim not to be nudists or naturists.  They're like women who are all in favour of equal rights but claim not to be feminists.
People who consider themselves nude optionists (or, to put it backwards, clothing optionists or optionalists) are also nudists if they practice social or public nudity voluntarily.
Those who wear clothes at nude sites and events are known scientifically as gawkers, party-poopers, and pervs.

Exceptions to nudity in nudism

We nudists are reasonable!  Even strict nudist rules are sometimes bent.  That lenience is part of the old nudist tradition, which continues today.
For examples:  warm clothes when the place is cold; nappies for babies and other incontinent people; shorts for menstruating women (though many nudist women choose other options); clothes when welcoming people at the entrance to a nudist site; aprons for fry cooks; sun hats; footwear; or, rarely, for unnaturally fearful children.  Also clothes to counter-act or prevent sunburn, illness, injury, etc.  Since your face and shoulders usually are most at risk of sunburn, you needn't cover your entire body just to shade those parts.
However, sunscreen lotion is very popular among nudists.
If you are pained by playing volleyball without a brassiere, you might be allowed to wear a top to play the game, even at a "nude-only" venue.  We're not sadists, after all!
Just ask an event organiser if you want an exception in order to wear something.  They will be kind and polite, even if they disallow the exemption.  Some event organisers might be more reasonable than others, so please forgive human fallibility.
Organisers of nude-only events are unlikely to accept as reasons for adults to cover themselves:
religious objections, newness to the nude freedom movement, shyness, fear of being seen naked, fear of others taking offence, fear of mistreatment because of being nude, fear of arousal, etc.
That last situation has good solutions, for which just ask the nudist veterans and officials.
If any of those bother you, please discuss it with the organizers.
At nude-optional events, on the other hand, you may wear clothes without having to justify them.  However, I hope you can instead join us in the liberation of nudity as much as possible.
Please see also the article "Are you proud of tolerating nudes while you are not nude?", above, in Section 5.4.5.

Proposals to promote nudism, nude-optionism, topfreedom, etc.

by Korky Day (continually revised, like much of this Web publication)

Without enough effort by us, society could sink further back into genital shame and fear.  The social nudity movement needs your help.  Please feel welcome to report your efforts to NFIR Calendar.

A.  Procedures.

       1.  Stop scheduling events to conflict with nude-friendly events.  Pressure the groups which do that.
       2.  Continue to encourage your group's members to attend events of other nude-friendly groups.
       3.  Discount admission for indigenes, students, disabled people, low income, and members of La Leche League and NOCIRC.  (NIFTY already does for students, disabled people, and low income.)
       4.  One admission card for all 4 clubs sponsoring swims.  (Idea of Paul of Skinnydippers.)
       5.  More quickly admit attenders to events.  For instance, at the swims, collect people's money well before the change rooms are open to us.
       6.  Rewards for bringing newcomers.  (See B.7.)
       7.  NIFTY brings in quite a lot of donations by asking for a yearly donation to be a member, possibly more income than if we charged a set price of 3 $.  People can then feel good about how generous they were.  That's better than just thinking that since they had to pay, they did—or better than just calculating whether they'd save more money by getting a membership and a lower rate of admission.  (So they're put into a generous mood instead of a scrimping mood.)  Also, people who cannot so easily afford 3 $ will be more likely to attend and give less—instead of staying away and paying nothing.
       8.  Discount for first-timers and/or young adults.

B.  Publicity in public.

       1.  More tabling for nude groups at non-nude events.
       2.  Fliers to neighbourhoods around pools.
       3.  Pass out more fliers on street corners, etc.
       4.  Discreet posters at each pool all the time.
       5.  Posters at hostels.
       6.  Badges and message clothing, such as "Nudist in disguise", "I'd rather be nude", "Nude-peace", "Nude-friendly".
       7.  To recruiters, maybe pay a commission for each newcomer who attends a swim.  Maybe 10 $.  That reward could be from the host group or from a separate fund.  Anyone could start such a fund.  (See A.6.)

C.  Publicity in the media.

       1.  More free announcements in newspapers, radio, telly, etc.
       2.  More free announcements on the Internet, especially Eventful and Craigslist.
       3.  Each group encourages its members to subscribe to NFIR Calendar.  Ask every attender to their events to tell you their e-address.  If they write it themselves, it will very likely be illegible.)
       4.  Each group posts a link to NFIR Calendar in its Web publication.
              (FVNC has done something similar.)
       5.  Innovative news creation.
           a.  Publicity stunts.
           b.  Demonstrations.
           c.  Public speeches, debates, and discussions.
           d.  Lawsuits.
           e.  More news releases because they generate free publicity,
                         mostly favourable.
       6.  Buy newspaper ads.
       7.  Notices in the government recreation brochures.
       8.  Call in to radio and television talk shows.
       9.  Write in to Internet discussions.
       10.  Organise with Web services, possibly Pledgebank, Facebook, Meetup, Eventful, MySpace, FlashMob, DemoChoice, etc.  (See others in Section 13, above.)

D.  Practice.

       1.  Encourage and support writers who are on our side, such as Carellin Brooks (author of the new book Wreck Beach), even if their writing isn't perfect.  See story above, in Section 15, News.
       2.  Expose more skin in public.  When required to wear a swimsuit, boldly wear a skimpy one, though not with a teasing attitude.
       3.  Streak.  (Warning:  you could get a criminal record.)
       4.  Legally, females now can be topfree anywhere males can be (in British Columbia, Manitoba, Omtario, etc.).  If you don't exercise that right, you might lose it.  That includes all public pool sessions.  Also parks (when they are open) and sidewalks.
       5.  Everywhere, not just at nudist places, refrain from scorning how people dress or don't dress, unless they were pressured into covering up.  Seldom mention a person's appearance.  Comment constructively or not at all.  Even to say how good someone looks might suggest that a person's worth depends largely on their looks, which are largely the luck of their genetics.  Instead, encourage an atmosphere of acceptance so that people don't worry so much about what they can't change.  When you encourage nutrition, health, and fitness, do so to help make everyone happier in all ways, not just looking good.
       6.  Go nude at home, especially when others are there, such as guests.  (To avoid criminal charges, be careful that you are not visible to people who are off your property.)  Go nude at others' homes if they don't object.
       7.  Skinnydip in groups at isolated places.
       8.  Don't consume alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, or other psycho-active drugs (drope) while nude or before disrobing.  Be naturally high instead.  If you are unsatisfied to be nude while totally sober, then perhaps you need to re-examine your entire life and attitudes.  You might be harming the cause of nudity.  Caffeine and sweets are drope, too.  Cut them out, along with sick food, such as white flour, white rice, fried food, artificial sweeteners, etc.
       9.  Social nudity and breastfeeding should help you with your sex hang-ups and eating disorders.  Improve yourself.
       10.  Don't sexually mutilate yourself or your male or female children ("circumcision").  Fully breastfeed them.

E.  Initiatives.

       1.  Show nude-friendly films (non-porn), maybe before or after swims.  (NIFTY has shown movies after swims, but without much nudity.)
       2.  Annual meeting with 1 or 2 representatives of each group.  Discuss common problems and how to advance the whole movement.
       3.  Expand the nude-friendly zone at Ulksen eastward from Acadia Beach (part of greater Wreck Beach) to West Spanish Banks Beach.

20.  CONCLUSION

Criteria for inclusion of events

This NFIR Calendar includes upcoming nude-friendly events, plus events which encourage topfree, in "British Columbia, Canada".
Although nude sex is usually good, it is not the subject of this e-publication.
To save you time and annoyance, we delete past events.
   * Events for pro-nude activists to attend clothed are in this fuchsia colour and with an asterisk (*).  Such events are related to the cause, such as restaurant fund-raisers and government meetings.

Some events are not listed herein if they are announced only to a group's members, such as at private resorts.  For many of those, please see Section 8.
Please get on the e-lists of any of the groups for further information.  Also check their Web publications often, such as
www.wreckbeach.org     and
http://club.skinnydipper.ca/other_events.php .
