Other books related to Leapism (Besides this book-to-be, which you are reading here on this Web site.)
None of the books below are fully Leapist, but I nevertheless recommend them, unless otherwise noted. I have read them, except as noted. To find these books listed below, try your favourite progressive bookstore. Also, you can look at www.booksinprint.com from Bowker's Books in Print.
Included below are some International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs) and Dewey Decimal Numbers (DD#s). Other editions of the following books might be available with other ISBNs, etc.
A few other books are mentioned elsewhere in the text. They are not all on this page yet. I've tried to put the best or most relevant books toward the top of each category. Related to Breast-right Gabriel Palmer, The Politics of Breastfeeding. Best book I've read on the subject, other than how-to books like the one below. ISBN 0-04-440877-3 or 0-86358-220-6. La Leche League, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. ISBN 2004 edition 0-452-28580-1, 1997 edition 0-912500-24-7, 1991 edition 0-452-26726-9. First published early 1960s? Tine Thevenin, The Family Bed: An Age Old Concept in Childrearing. Forcing your children to sleep alone is cruel and unnecessary, the opposite to what most "experts" claim. ISBN softcover ?, hardcover 0-9602010-1-7. Deborah Jackson, Tom Newton, Three in a Bed: The Benefits of Sharing Your Bed with Your Baby. Jackson was a breastfeeding mother, I think. ISBN paperback 1-58234-051-X. Paperback from Amazon 10.47 $; average customer rating: 4 of 5. (Probably I read this years ago.) Peggy Claude-Pierre, The Secret Language of Eating Disorders. ISBN paperback 0-375-75018-5, hardcover 0-7881-9541-7. How eating disorders are a product of insufficient emotional and physical nurturing, not a medical disease. The author was forced to close her susccessful Montreaux Clinic nearly BC, Victoria, because she challenged that medical orthodoxy. Ashley Montagu, Touching: The Human Significance of the Skin. ISBN 0-06-096028-0. Phyllis Chesler, Mothers on Trial: The Battle for Children and Custody. Explodes the myth that mothers are favoured in child custody trials. That lie serves to further oppress women and children. That's very similar to witch-burning. The truth is that the bias is toward fathers when they contest custody. When they don't contest it, of course, then the mother might get it, which often happens. ISBN paperback 0-931188-46-6, hHardcover 0-07-010701-7. Out of print. From Amazon 2.60 $; average customer rating: 5 of 5. Related to Joy-earned Jerry Dorsman, How to Quit Drinking Without A.A.: A Complete Self-Help Guide. Includes lots of different methods to try. Not anti-AA, but for those who want other methods. ISBN 0-7615-1290-X. From Amazon 11.17 $ paperback; average customer rating 3 of 5. Books and literature from Alchoholics Anonymous (A.A.) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), etc. William Dufty, Sugar Blues. How highly concentrated sugar, especially if refined, acts as a psycho-active drug. Extremely readable. For adults and teens. A small non-fiction book. ISBN 0-446-77701-3. Robert Crumb, in Zap comic books and others. (He might appear to be rationalizing the use of illegal drugs, but I think the underlying message is how drope deludes you and makes your crazy.) Mostly fiction. Gilbert Shelton, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comic books. (He might appear to be glorifying the use of illegal drugs, but I think the true underlying message is that it is hilarious how drope makes you so irrational and self-defeating.) Fiction. Ken Kesey, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Fiction. Kesey, who is famous for taking psychedelic drugs, nevertheless wrote this famous and stirring novel, a courageous attack on the subjugation of "mental patients", which is mostly accomplished by forcing them onto slightly different drugs--which are legal and by prescription. The award-winning movie is supposed to be really good, too, though I haven't seen it. ISBN paperback 1-58663-379-1 or 0-14-118122-2 or 0-7645-8662-9 or 0-14-028334-X or 0-14-023601-5 or 0-88122-121-X or 0-14-004312-8 or 0-451-16396-6 or 0-7910-7118-9. Beatrice Sparks, Go Ask Alice (A Real Diary). Published anonymously in 1971. Inspiring story of woe of a middle-class, 15-year-old, female doper in the late 1960s. Very absorbing. Young adult reading level. Paperback from Amazon: 2.35 $ and +. ISBN paperback 0-689-81785-1 or 1-58303-044-1. Carlton Jackson, Apostle of Nonconformity, a biography of J.I. Rodale (Jerome Irving Rodale, 1898-1971), the great under-appreciated pioneer of the modern health food and organic farming movements. He popularised the term "organic farming". He also advocated breastfeeding. His formerly great monthly magazine Prevention has fallen into the hands of money-hungry heirs and others who have perverted his ideals and standards. For instance, they now recommend caffeine. I suggest you buy back issues at yard sales and used bookstores if he or his son Robert Rodale are listed as editors. ISBN: ________ . [probable author and title] Related to Nude-peace Jack D. Douglas, et al, The Nude Beach. (Sage Publications.) Sociology. Lawrence Langner, The Importance of Wearing Clothes. Extensive but fun history and psychology of clothes. How clothing changed "civilisation". Updated by Julian Robinson 1991. (I read a previous edition. First published in 1954.) ISBN hardcover 1-55599-039-8. Well illustrated; 400 pages; 22 $ retail. Lee Baxandall and The Naturist Society (see "Other Web sites" page), World Guide to Nude Beaches and Recreation. 1997 edition ISBN paperback 0-934106-21-5. 16.80 $. Rita Mae Brown, Rubyfruit Jungle. A joyous novel of sexual freedom and feminism, featuring lesbians. ISBN paperback 0-553-27886-X. Retail 7.50 $. Reprinted 1983. Ashley Montagu, Touching--see "Breast-right" section above. Related to Philocracy Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex. The feminist classic from ~1947. From every angle she examines the feminine. ISBN paperback 0-679-72451-6, hardcover 0-679-42016-9. 17 $ and 23 $.
Elizabeth Gould Davis, The First Sex. Inspiring theories and evidence of pre-historical feminism and matriarchy. Late 1960s? Out of print? Elaine Morgan, The Descent of Woman: The Classic Study of Evolution. An intriguing feminist theory of aquatic human evolution. ISBN paperback 0-285-62700-7, 4th edition, revised 1997, 13 $ (I read a previous edition). DD# 576.8. Thomas Gordon, Parent Effectiveness Training: The Proven Program for Raising Responsible Children. Also titled P.E.T. See also other books in this series. The principles are the same in each book in the series, so you can apply them to people of any age, position, or situation. In a nutshell: listen to each other's feelings and then negotiate on the basis of equality. That's much easier said than done, so read this and take the course. I telephoned the author in the mid-1990s~ to suggest a revision. I said his one small example of giving a bottle to a baby would be better if it were giving a breast to a baby. I said that the mutually beneficial give-and-take of breastfeeding satisfies his criteria of problem-solving, whereas bottle-feeding doesn't. He agreed to revise that part if he does a revision. ISBN paperback 0-609-80693-9 or 968-13-0345-8, hardcover 0-88326-039-5 or 0-317-63115-2. Amazon: 13 $ and up. Paul Blanshard, editor, Classics of Free Thought. Smith, Atheism: The Case Against God. A thorough proof that God is just a product of wishful thinking--and worse. (Skeptic's Bookshelf.) ISBN hardcover 0-87975-124-X. DD# 211/.8. Price 20 $. Paperback from Amazon: 14 $ new, 9.50 $. Vance Packard, The Hidden Persuaders. The classic expose of psychological techniques of advertising. 1950s. Out of print? David Brock, Blinded by the Right: The Conscience of an Ex-Conservative. By a very skilled and entertaining USA author, a formerly closetted gay. Are you ready to have your "conservative" beliefs challenged? You won't be bored, for sure. Has 2 illustrations (of author), few footnotes, no index or bibliography. (NY: Crown Publishers, 2002.) ISBN hardcover 0-8129-3099-1. Price on hardcover 26 $. Misc. None yet in this category.
testing the following (you can ignore) 2008 May, Vancouver Island & B.C. Interior Welcome to some or all of these events, you practicing or potential nudes, nudists, naturists, skinny-dippers, free beachers, nude sunbathers, nude sun-tanners, nude sun-worshipers, nude-optionists, clothing-optionists, clothesfreers, jaybirds, starkers, streakers, mooners, nude protesters, naked savages, half-naked savages, sweat-lodgers, naked pagans, naked witches, naked wiccans, gymnosophists, nude cyclists, nude artists, Burning Man nudes, nude models, nude body painters, cottontails, recovering textiles, nude curiousers, sky-clads, nude Digambara Jainists, other nude Jainists, nude Freedomite Doukhobors, other nude Doukhobors, Leapists, nude-peacers, topfrees, bra-burners, bold breastfeeders, and even you who dislike "labels" and "pigeon-holes"! Remain naked, get naked, be bare, undress, disrobe, undrape, strip,
streak, go topfree, breastfeed (and never use baby bottles or dummies /
pacifiers), and don't sexually mutilate children (circumcision, etc.)!
Most events are for all sexes and ages, conditionally. Most admit you without prior arrangement. If you lack money or transportation, etc., ask the organisers. Many events require nudity, possibly with exceptions: see below in section XVII. "Exceptions in nudism". Some events are not for nudity, as noted. If you dress, consider wearing a pro-nude, pro-topfree, or pro-breastfeeding shirt or a badge from one of the groups. Genuine nudists accept everyone, regardless of physical ability, health, fitness, or genetic inheritance. It should never be a beauty contest. That does not mean that we encourage you to let your body go, but that we welcome you into our movement at your level of achievement. About refused admission, see section V.3.a. Behaviour, below. 2. E-mailing
Once a month we e-mail a link to this calendar free to anyone who wants
it. Sometimes the link doesn't work, as sometimes with Hotmail. If
so, please paste (or type) the address into the Internet address box: www.korky.ca/nfirc.html .
Please e-reply to intended people only, not necessarily "Reply all". (That is how you would care for any e-mail.) In March a reader clicked on "Reply to sender" to our monthly reminder, assuming that she'd reply only to the editor. However, the reminder (to read this Web publication) is sent not only by the editor, but it also is relayed by a few nude groups to their members by e-mail. So if you reply to one of those relayed messages, you'll be sending either to the relaying person--or to a whole group list, such as a Yahoo group. The latter happened to her. That mistake can happen, of course, with any of your e-mail, not just ours. Always read the recipient box before sending your reply. To contribute information, enquire, comment, subscribe, cancel a subscription, etc., e-write to korkyday [insert a with a circle round it] yahoo.com (see end).
Please e-forward our link to friends and groups. If they don't object, send us their e-addresses. 3. Before you attend — important a. BEHAVIOUR
Banned at most of these events are uninvited staring and following, premature advances, offencive talk, overt sex, etc. If allowed, cameras, photography, and sound recording must be pre-authorised by the club and the subjects. Please report all violators in order to help maintain a positive environment for everyone.
Any group may refuse admission, etc. without explanation. Be nice or risk being banned by all the groups. It is very unlikely, however, that they will bar anyone because of how you look, racism, or other unfair discrimination. Sit only on a towel or other cloth if others might sit there later, such as in a sauna. Do not urinate into the ocean, lake, river, pool, etc. b. PERSONAL NAMES
Traditionally, attenders refer to each other by first name only, except
when someone allows more. When communicating with non-attenders, do
not tell them who attends or who does not attend--without their
permission. Say, "The nudist movement honours privacy, which protects
us."
c. CONFIRM BEFORE ATTENDING
Because of possible errors, unavoidable cancellations, etc., please
confirm an event before attending, especially if you will be travelling
far. Admittance eligibility varies. Reservations occasionally required. Memberships sold at most events. Joining by Internet and mail is preferred, when available.
d. DETAILS ABOUT CALENDAR EVENTS
For each event in the calendar listings, see also further details and the group's general description farther below.
e. BRING OTHERS!
To enhance your appreciation of an event, to share an uplifting
experience, and to help our movement, we encourage you to bring
friends, relatives, a date, etc.!
4. Cancellations, irregularities, changes, strikes, etc. NIFTY's March swim is cancelled because of maintenance at Templeton Pool. April might be cancelled, too. SD is trying to book Newton Wave Pool for April 26 and May 24. See section VI.3. below. Two tentative events are in April. See calendar above. 5. Nude-friendly and affiliated events
* Events for pro-nude activists to attend clothed are in this fuchsia colour and with an asterisk. The events support nude sites or groups, but, for one reason or another, they do not have nudity or topfree.
Black or red type for
an event, on the other hand, usually mean nude optional or nude only.
Occasionally such an event is topfree or bare-as-you-dare.
VI. INDOOR SWIMS DETAILS — VANCOUVER AREA Usually 4 groups at 4 or 5 pools per month. (More details here in NFIR Calendar than anywhere else! For instance, http://www.nudeswims.bc.ca/ is trying, but we're more accurate.)
1. Conditions for all 4 swims
Generally the same behaviour rules apply as at the public sessions, or
stricter. (See above section "V.3.1. Before you attend—important".)
Each of the 4 groups rents a different public pool for about 8 to 10
swim nights a year, to which it invites you. The prices, rules,
facilities, and activities are similar at all 4. Many people go to
each of the 4. NIFTY's is nude optional. The other 3 are instead for nudes only.
See how else they differ below in this section--and later in each group's entry (sections VIII. to X.).
Schedules. Most of the swims are September (after Labour Day) through June, with minor variations around holidays, pool cleaning closures, etc. See sections III. and V.4. above. Facilities. Each site has a pool, sauna, hot tub with jets, and diving board(s) (?Newton Wave Pool has diving?). Each is wheelchair accessible. Usually they play water volleyball, for which it helps if you are 122 cm tall or taller.
Joining. Skinnydippers and NIFTY require membership for adults. Van Tan and Wreck Beach SC do not. You may join at the door. Joining does not obligate you, other than to follow the pool rules, especially respect for others. Your information is not given out without your permission. Tickets and passes.
These are private events at public facilities. Tickets or free passes
which are for public sessions will not admit you to these private
events. However, certain documents will get you a large discount at
NIFTY swims: see VI.5., the last sub-section below.
Minors. At all these swims (and most other nude-friendly events) parents
and legal guardians may bring their minor offspring at no extra charge
and without enroling them. (Except Newton Wave Pool, see VI.3. below.)
No other minors may attend. A breastfeeding professional (IBCLC) often attends.
Lockers. Some lockers can be secured with a lock you bring. Others lock only with their own mechanism. Some cost 25 ˘ or 50 ˘. Some return your coins after use. Restaurants.
Right after most swims, some of the attenders meet clothed at a
restaurant to buy and eat food and to chat. Ask the organisers.*
Cycling: For bicycle routes in Vancouver, as below or: www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/engsvcs/transport/cycling/routes.htm .
For North Vancouver, www.translink.bc.ca/files/pdf/cyclemap/northshore.pdf .

For more information about a nude-friendly event, please don't contact
the pool personnel. Instead, contact the groups (below) or the editor
(end, below).
